Sleep Disturbances
If you answered ‘yes’ to some of the questions above, and you have been experiencing sleep difficulties, the following information might be of interest to you.
You might also ask yourself how common are sleep disorders. The American Sleep Association (AMA) states that 50 to 70 millions of adults in the United States suffer fromsleep disturbances and insomnia is one of the most frequently presented. Also, Statistics Canada reports that 25% of adults report different types of difficulties with their sleep and up to 15% of adults report experiencing insomnia symptoms, which have negative consequences during daytime.
Sleep disturbances can have different causes and can be influenced by different issues. There are times when acute sleep problems related to different life related stressors could turn into chronic sleep problems due to different perpetuating factors.
During our counselling or psychotherapy sessions, we will develop a better understanding on what might trigger your sleep difficulties and what factors could maintain the sleep problems. In other words, we will give you the strategies needed to avoid entering the, so called, “vicious cycle of insomnia” and to eliminate any of the perpetuating factors which maintain insomnia.
One of the most researched therapeutic approaches to treat insomnia, which was proven to improve quality of sleep is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for insomnia (CBT-i).
