OCD
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Therapy
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), as the name states, is characterized by to two groups of symptoms: obsessions and compulsions. Obsessions can be thoughts, images or even urges that are intrusive, repetitive and tend to stay in awareness for longer periods of time and cause distress and feelings of anxiety to the person who is experiencing them. Compulsions, on the other hand, are behaviours or activities that a person does, in order to reduce the levels of anxiety or distress caused by obsessions.
Treatments
There are different psychotherapeutic approaches used to treat OCD, however one of the most researched and effective therapeutic approaches to address symptoms related to OCD is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and more specifically Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy. Sometimes medication prescribed by a medical doctor is another therapeutic approach used to treat OCD.
